Open Your Heart: A Yoga and Journaling Practice to Reflect on the Year

The end of the year is a perfect time to pause and reconnect with ourselves. It’s a moment to honour the journey we’ve been on and open up to what’s ahead. Through heart-opening yoga and thoughtful journaling, we can reflect on the joys, challenges, and growth of the past year while creating space for new possibilities.

This blog invites you to roll out your mat, breathe deeply, and let your heart guide you.

The Power of Heart-Opening Poses

In yoga, heart-opening poses—like Camel Pose —are more than just physical stretches. They encourage emotional release, inviting vulnerability, trust, and love to surface. When we open the heart space, we soften the tension we might carry in the chest and shoulders from stress or guarding ourselves.

This openness creates the ideal state for reflection. When the heart is open, our mind can shift from self-criticism to self-compassion, and our reflections become more honest and kind.

This short yoga sequence is designed to ground you in gratitude and prepare your mind for clarity:

1. Seated Meditation and warm-up on the ground with wonderful twists (10 minutes)

2. Heart-Opening Camel pose (5 minutes)

3. Slow flow (10 minutes)

Lie back, letting your body absorb the practice. Visualize releasing anything that no longer serves you and welcoming fresh, vibrant energy.

5 Mindfulness Questions to Ponder:

Reflection doesn’t have to be daunting. Grab your journal, light a candle, and take some time to explore these questions:

  1. What moments this year brought me the deepest joy, and how can I create more of them in the year ahead?
  2. What challenges have I faced, and what valuable lessons have they taught me?
  3. What habits, patterns, or relationships have I outgrown, and how can I release them with love?
  4. How has my yoga or mindfulness practice evolved this year? What benefits have I noticed?
  5. What is one meaningful intention I can set for the new year that aligns with my highest self?

Allow yourself to answer honestly, without judgment. There is no right or wrong—only your truth.
