Self Oil Massage – Abhyanga

Abhyanga is an oil massage where warm oil is applied all over the body, if possible, including the scalp and the soles of the feet (attention should be paid to cleaning the oil from the soles at the end, not to slip). Follow the video below to do it at home.

Ayurveda recommends self-oil massage daily. In modern times, daily massage (and the consequent cleaning afterwards) might not be possible, but if you include it in your weekly self-care routine, you will start feeling the benefits.

During the massage, we use warm organic oil, and we need to be in a warm room. When massaging the limbs, we use long strokes and make circular motions around the joint. This increases our proprioception and stimulates blood and energy flow in the joints, reducing pain or discomfort and putting us in touch with what our body is feeling.

Always apply the oil clockwise circles (imagine you have a clock on your stomach, so the motion will go from right to left). Apply light pressure on sensitive areas such as the abdomen or the heart. Use more oil and spend more time where nerve endings are concentrated, such as the soles of the feet, palms of the hands and along the base of the fingernails.

Self-oil massage also helps to improve our immunity and detoxifies the skin.

To warm the oil, submerge a small bottle in hot water and wait until the oil is warm to the touch.

Circular motions should be applied all over, paying particular attention to joints and the belly.  Circular motions over rounded areas, such as your head or joints, and straight strokes on straight areas, such as your arms and legs, work best.

After you’re done, relax for 10-15 minutes, letting the oil and the massage do their magic. The longer the oil is on, the deeper it penetrates. During this time, you can read something relaxing or uplifting and rest, or shave, cut nails, and get ready for the day.

Dab excess oil off with paper towels if you like, then follow with a relaxing warm bath or shower. If your schedule doesn’t allow for a daily massage, try to squeeze it in at least three or four times a week. You’ll find it’s worth it!

For self-abhyanga, sesame oil is recommended for its warming and nourishing qualities. Medicated Ayurveda oils can also be used.

Give yourself a full-body oil massage daily. It is nourishing, pacifies the doshas, relieves fatigue, provides stamina, pleasure and perfect sleep, enhances the complexion and the lustre of the skin, promotes longevity, and nourishes all body parts.
