Yoga Lab – Sun Salutations
Sun Salutations are one of the most recognised sequences in yoga, yet many of us learn them through repetition rather than understanding. We follow along in class, move when everyone else moves and gradually become familiar with the pattern. But if someone suddenly asked us to continue the sequence from memory, many people would pause.
That isn’t because the sequence is complicated. More often, it is because we have learned to copy movement rather than understand structure.
Sun Salutations are often treated as a warm-up, something to move through quickly on the way to the “main” practice. But every part has a purpose. The transitions matter. The breathing changes the entire feeling of the sequence. Small adjustments in alignment can completely change how steady, easeful and connected the flow feels in the body.
When you begin to understand why each movement comes next, something shifts. The practice becomes less about remembering instructions and more about recognising a rhythm. Instead of feeling like a list of poses to memorise, the sequence starts to make sense.
That is the focus of the next Yoga Lab workshop on June 20th, 2026.
Rather than simply repeating Sun Salutations, we will slow things down and take the sequence apart step by step. We will explore how the flow is built, how breath and movement work together, common areas where people lose confidence and how small changes can make the practice feel clearer and more natural.
The aim is not to make Sun Salutations more complicated. It is actually the opposite. Understanding the mechanics behind what you are doing often makes practice simpler, calmer and much easier to remember.
The Yoga Lab – Sun Salutations
Saturday 20th June
10:00-12:00
W.G. Grace Community Centre, SE9 4HG, Grove Park

A few notes on what the session will include:
- Breaking down each transition and understanding its function
- How breath shapes the rhythm and quality of the flow
- Common alignment patterns that create difficulty, and how to work with them
- Variations to suit different bodies and levels of experience
- Building a version of the sequence you can practise independently with confidence
Whether you are new to Sun Salutations or have been practising for years, working with this level of detail tends to change how the sequence feels – and how well it stays with you.
