Earth Day Reflections: Reconnecting with Our Roots Through Yoga and Stillness

Each year, on April 22nd, Earth Day invites us to pause and consider our place in the web of life. It’s not just about planting trees or picking up litter—though those are beautiful acts of care—it’s about remembering that we are nature. Not separate from her, not above her, but deeply, intricately part of her rhythms, cycles and intelligence.
Today, I found myself taking a slow walk through the park, noticing the buds on trees beginning to open, the feel of the ground beneath my feet, the quiet rustle of life all around. These are the moments that make Earth Day feel alive—not a campaign or a hashtag, but a gentle nudge to realign with something older and wiser than ourselves.
🌱 How Have You Connected with the Earth Today?
Take a moment. Have you stepped outside? Felt the breeze, listened to the birds, touched the soil? Even if you live in the city, Mother Earth is there—in the sunlight pouring through your window, the water in your glass, the air you breathe. She is in your body, too. Our bones are made of minerals from the Earth; our breath is shared with the trees.
In Ayurveda, the five great elements—earth, water, fire, air and ether—are not just poetic ideas. They are real, present, and constantly shaping our experience. When we lose our connection to nature, we lose a piece of ourselves. But when we return—through stillness, movement, breath, or intention—we remember our wholeness.
🕊 A Moment of Silence: Honouring Pope Francis
This Earth Day also holds a deeper sense of reflection. I’m observing a moment of silence today after hearing of the death of Pope Francis. He was a great man, regardless of one’s faith, who used his voice to speak for the planet and for the marginalised. His encyclical Laudato Si’ was a powerful call to action—a reminder that caring for the Earth is a moral, spiritual, and communal responsibility.
Let’s honour his legacy not just with words, but through daily acts of reverence—choosing kindness, treading lightly, and remembering that every small action matters.
🧘♀️ Let’s Move Together: A New Beginning
In this spirit of reconnection, I’m delighted to invite you to something new. Starting tomorrow, I’ll be teaching a weekly Wednesday yoga class at the W.G. Grace Community Centre, designed to help you find your flow—both on and off the mat.
This class is more than an hour of movement. It’s a moment in the week when you can come home to yourself. To breathe, to move in harmony with your body, and to honour the sacredness of simply being present.
We’ll build strength and fluidity through accessible flow and Hatha sequences, and close with stillness—an echo of the Earth’s calm, quiet presence.

🌿 Come As You Are
Bring your mat, your blanket, your water and most importantly, your presence. No matter your level or how long it’s been since you last practised, you are welcome. This is a safe space for exploration, healing, and connection.
Let’s create a little sanctuary together—one breath, one step, one session at a time.
