Exploring the Kleshas in Kissamos: Reflections from Our Yoga Retreat in Crete
Our recent Yoga Holiday in Crete was more than a getaway – it was a journey of self-discovery, mindfulness, and connection.
Set on the serene shores of Kissamos, surrounded by sea views and the scent of olive groves, participants explored the Kleshas, the five root causes of human suffering in yogic philosophy.
A Journey of Clarity and Connection
Many students described the experience as peaceful, clarifying, and deeply connective. Words like “peace,” “clarity,” “sharing,” and “acceptance” echoed through the feedback. One participant wrote,
“This retreat was very fulfilling on many dimensions — spiritual, social, intellectual, and practical.”
Another reflected that the retreat “helped put emotions into words and brought understanding to things that previously felt confusing.”
The group dynamic also played a big role — the safe, supportive atmosphere allowed everyone to share openly and grow together.
The Teachings that Resonated Most
Practices that stood out included asana corrections, guided meditations, and group discussions.
One participant shared,
“Yoga is always something that brings me inner peace, but the way we explored the philosophy behind the Kleshas made it even more meaningful.”
Another added,
“It was good to revisit the balance in all things — physically, mentally, and emotionally.”
The Crete Environment: A Natural Teacher
The beautiful beachfront shala created a serene environment that nurtured the practice. Students loved the view from the yoga space and the sense of calmness and natural beauty.
One participant noted,
“The yoga shala was very serene – doing yoga with the sea breeze and the sound of waves was a gift.”
Others mentioned small suggestions, like improving the flooring for comfort, but overall, the setting was described as “amazing,” “peaceful,” and “inspiring.”
🚶♀️ Excursions and Exploration
Excursions were highlights for many, offering time to connect with nature and the local culture. The walk through the gorge and visit to Elafonissi Beach stood out.
As one participant wrote,
“Walking the gorge was good — the trip to Elafonissi was a wonderful experience.”
Reflections and Gratitude
The closing reflections were deeply moving. Participants expressed gratitude for both the teachings and the community that formed.
“Geny is a very good instructor — encouraging, professional, and fun.”
“I learned so much, and the space created was warm and full of understanding.”
Every participant who responded said they would recommend the retreat to a friend — with scores of 4 or 5 out of 5 — and all wished to be informed about future events.
Looking Ahead
When asked about returning, most participants said yes — some even hoped to revisit the same venue, while others expressed curiosity about exploring different parts of Crete or new destinations.
One participant summed up the collective feeling beautifully:
“This retreat reminded me of what truly matters — balance, awareness, and connection. I left lighter, more peaceful, and grateful.”
